Good -Life Devotional:
THE BLESSING OF SUFFERING FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SAKE
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
The theme of suffering for righteousness’ sake appears throughout the Bible, highlighting how those who endure trials for God’s sake are blessed and will ultimately see God’s purposes prevail. Let's explore these verses to understand this theme:
1. Psalm 37:37 (AMP)
"Mark the blameless man and behold the upright; for there is a [happy] end for the man of peace."
This verse speaks to the idea of observing the lives of the righteous and upright. Although they may endure hardships, there is a promise of a peaceful and blessed future for those who stay faithful to God.
2. Genesis 39 (Joseph in Prison)
Joseph was wrongly accused and imprisoned, but God was with him throughout his suffering. His life serves as a powerful example of enduring hardship for righteousness’ sake. Despite the injustice, Joseph remained faithful, and God eventually elevated him to a place of authority, turning his trials into blessings for himself and others.
3. 1 Peter 3:14, 17-18 (AMP)
"But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, [though it is not certain that you will] you are blessed (happy, to be admired and favored by God). Do not be afraid of their intimidating threats, nor be troubled or disturbed [by their opposition]."
"For it is better that you suffer [unjustly] for doing what is right, if that should be God’s will, than to suffer [justly] for doing wrong. For indeed Christ died for sins once for all, the Just and Righteous for the unjust and unrighteous (the innocent for the guilty), so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit."
Peter reassures believers that, although suffering for righteousness can be painful, it is a blessing in God’s eyes. Like Joseph, and ultimately like Christ, those who suffer unjustly for righteousness will see God's favor.
4. Romans 8:28 (AMP)
"And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose."
This verse captures the heart of the promise: God is able to use all situations, even suffering, to accomplish His greater plan for good in the lives of those who love Him. For Joseph, this meant his suffering became a means to save many lives; for Christ, it was the means to offer salvation to all.
Together, these passages encourage believers that suffering for righteousness has a purpose, and God will work everything for good, even when we face hardship and injustice.
In our daily prayers we should seek for strength and patience while going through trials .
PRAYER : Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptations.
