NO ROOM FOR SEXISM IN THE CHURCH

Good -Life Devotional:

NO ROOM FOR SEXISM IN THE CHURCH

By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi

The Apostle Paul's teachings on women, especially in passages like Ephesians 5:22-24 and 1 Timothy 2:11-12, have often been debated and, at times, misunderstood or misapplied in ways that may appear to support sexism. But a deeper look at the historical and cultural context reveals a more balanced understanding.

1. Mutual Submission and Respect (Ephesians 5:21-33): In Ephesians 5, Paul starts by saying, "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" (verse 21). This phrase sets the foundation for mutual respect and submission in Christian relationships, including marriage. When Paul speaks specifically to wives and husbands, he emphasizes a model where the husband’s role is to love sacrificially, "as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her" (verse 25). The call for wives to submit to their husbands is part of a broader framework of mutual love and respect, rather than a one-sided demand for obedience.

2. Cultural Context: In 1 Timothy 2:11-12, where Paul instructs women to learn in silence and full submission, it’s important to recognize the cultural setting of the early church. In many Greco-Roman societies, women had limited educational opportunities and were often not trained in religious teachings. Paul’s instructions were likely aimed at encouraging order in worship and reflecting respect for established social norms of that time, rather than enforcing a belief that women were inferior or unworthy of speaking.

3. Value of Women in Ministry: Paul’s letters and actions demonstrate his support for women in ministry. He mentions female leaders like Priscilla (Romans 16:3), Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2), and Junia (Romans 16:7), all of whom played significant roles in the early church. This suggests that he recognized the gifts of women and valued their contributions to ministry.

When read in context, Paul’s teachings affirm the equal value and dignity of women while also acknowledging different roles within marriage and the church. Misunderstandings can arise when passages are read without their broader context, leading some to misuse them in ways that do not align with the principles of mutual love and respect.

In our daily prayers we should seek for the humility to give our best in whatever position we find ourselves .

PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to serve in your vineyard .
