Good -Life Devotional:
THE DANGER OF GIVING OFFERINGS OUT OF THE PROCEEDS OF CORRUPTION
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Giving offerings tainted by corruption is a grievous sin that offends God's holiness. Scripture vividly warns against this practice, as seen in the stories of Ananias and Sapphira, Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, and King Saul.
In Acts 5:1-11, Ananias and Sapphira brought part of their property sale proceeds as an offering, lying about the amount to appear generous. Their deceit was exposed, and both died instantly. This shows that God values integrity over the appearance of sacrifice.
Similarly, in Numbers 16, Korah, Dathan, and Abiram led a rebellion against God’s appointed leadership. Despite their offerings and claims of holiness, their corruption led to their destruction as the earth swallowed them alive. Their story reminds us that rebellion and self-serving motives are unacceptable before God.
King Saul’s disobedience in 1 Samuel 15 further illustrates this truth. He spared King Agag and kept the best livestock under the guise of making offerings to God. However, Samuel rebuked him, saying, “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Sam. 15:22). Saul's kingdom was stripped away because of his defiance.
God declares in Isaiah 61:8, “I, the Lord, love justice; I hate robbery and wrongdoing.” Offering proceeds from corruption mocks God’s justice. True worship requires integrity and obedience, not ill-gotten gains.
A person's offering is an expression of their life therefore , receiving offering from the proceeds of corruption is an endorsement of corruption. Preachers who deliberately encourage this will not go unpunished like God did to Eli and his son Hophni and Phinehas 1 Samuel 2:22-34 .
In Micah 3 God condemn preachers who patronise corrupt persons for the love of money
This is one of the major reasons behind the increase in corruption in Nigeria. Christians are expected to report erring preachers to Jesus Christ demanding quick judgment to save Nigeria from collapse . He will not spare them like Peter did against Ananias and Sapphira .
You cannot steal public funds meant for payment of salaries and infrastructural development and give a portion to your priest and expect God to bless you , such acts results in calamity on the preacher and the guilty. The bible says Proverbs 15:8
The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
