HOW CORRUPTION RESULTS IN DISHONOR AND LOSS OF RESPECT
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Isaiah 1:23
"Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them."
One of the reasons many once revered preachers in Nigeria have lost respect in the eyes of the public is their display of corrupt practices , many have been linked to extortion by false presence , oil bunkering, smuggling of mineral resources, money laundering, sex scandals and open support for corrupt leaders.
Corruption, a deliberate act of dishonesty for personal gain, ultimately leads to dishonor and a loss of respect. The Bible repeatedly warns against corrupt practices, emphasizing their destructive consequences. Proverbs 10:9 states, “He who walks in integrity walks securely, but he who takes a crooked way will be discovered” (AMP). While corruption may bring temporary benefits, it exposes individuals to disgrace when the truth comes to light.
Corruption erodes trust, the foundation of respect. Proverbs 22:1 reminds us, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold” (AMP). When someone engages in corruption, their reputation suffers, making it difficult to regain respect. Friends, family, and colleagues may distance themselves, viewing the individual as unreliable and self-serving.
Moreover, God condemns corruption as sin, promising judgment. Micah 7:3 highlights the greed behind corrupt practices: “Concerning evil, both hands do it well… They all scheme together.” This behavior separates people from God and others, leading to spiritual and social alienation.
True honor and respect come from integrity and righteousness. By rejecting corruption and adhering to God’s principles, individuals can build lasting relationships and gain favor with both God and man (Proverbs 3:3-4).
In our daily prayers we should seek for a healthy appetite for God's word and for righteous leadership to bring about a righteous culture.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power for the promotion of a righteous culture.
