Good -Life Devotional: MONEY, FAITH, AND MARRIAGE: A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
Deuteronomy 14:23
" And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; THAT THOU MAYEST LEARN TO FEAR THE LORD THY GOD ALWAYS.'
John 13:34
" A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. '
From to the above scripture the essence of giving is that we may break the yoke of selfishness and work in love for God and man.
Research has shown that Christians who struggle with giving the new testament tithes mentioned in 1Corinthians 16;1-2, and Galatians 6:6 tend to have family crisis resulting in emotional separations . Many marriages are deviod of love because of this .
Money, faith, and marriage are deeply interconnected, as they reveal the condition of our hearts. A person who struggles to give money to God’s work often finds it difficult to express genuine, selfless love for their spouse. True love and generosity stem from a heart transformed by the fear of God, which eliminates selfishness and fosters unity in marriage.
The fear of God, foundational to a thriving marriage, is cultivated through obedience to His commands, including giving. In the Old Testament, God instituted tithing to teach His people the fear of the Lord (Deuteronomy 14:22-23). Similarly, in the New Testament, the Macedonian church exemplified sacrificial giving, even in poverty, as an expression of their love for God and others (2 Corinthians 8:1-5). The Philippian church generously supported Paul’s ministry, demonstrating their faith in God’s provision (Philippians 4:16-19). Paul also instructed churches to set aside a portion of their income for God’s work (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).
Proverbs 3:9-10 reminds us to honor the Lord with our wealth, promising His blessing in return. When we learn to give freely to God, our hearts grow in love and humility, enabling us to love our spouses unconditionally. A marriage rooted in the fear of God will always bear the fruit of selflessness, generosity, and enduring love.
PRAYER; Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome heartbreak.
