HOW TO OVERCOME SPIRITUAL COMPLACENCY (PART 2)
By Rev Michael Benson Ajayi
4. DECEPTION AND FALSE SECURITY
Complacency leads to self-deception, making one believe all is well while neglecting their spiritual health.
Amos 6:1 (AMP):
“Woe (judgment is coming) to those who are at ease and carefree in Zion, and to those on the mountain of Samaria who feel secure.”
5. MISSED OPPORTUNITIES TO FULFILL GOD’S PURPOSE
Complacency can prevent believers from taking action or fulfilling God’s mission.
Proverbs 24:30-34 (AMP):
“I passed by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man lacking understanding and common sense; and, behold, it was all overgrown with thorns, and nettles were covering its surface, and its stone wall was broken down. When I saw, I considered it well; I looked and received instruction. ‘Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest [and daydream],’ then your poverty will come as a robber, and your want like an armed man.”
6. DRIFTING AWAY FROM GOD
Complacency allows sin to creep in, weakening the believer’s relationship with God.
Hebrews 2:1 (AMP):
“For this reason [that is, because of God’s final revelation in His Son Jesus and because of Jesus’ superiority to the angels], we must pay much closer attention than ever to the things that we have heard, so that we do not in any way drift away [from the truth].”
7. LOSS OF SPIRITUAL REWARDS
A complacent life often lacks the perseverance and vigilance needed to earn eternal rewards.
2 John 1:8 (AMP):
“Watch yourselves, so that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward [when He grants rewards to faithful believers].”
ENCOURAGEMENT AGAINST COMPLACENCY:
The Bible urges believers to remain vigilant, actively seek God, and continually grow in faith.
Philippians 3:13-14 (AMP):
“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider that I have made it my own yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the [heavenly] prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
2 Peter 1:5-8 (AMP):
“For this very reason, applying your diligence [to the divine promises], make every effort in [exercising] your faith to develop moral excellence, and in moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, steadfastness, and in your steadfastness, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly affection, and in your brotherly affection, [develop Christian] love. For as these qualities are yours and are increasing [in you as you grow toward spiritual maturity], they will keep you from being useless and unproductive in regard to the true knowledge and greater understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
By heeding these warnings and encouragements, believers can combat spiritual complacency and maintain a vibrant relationship with God.
In our daily prayers we should seek for a healthy appetite for God's word and the zeal to do his will always .
PRAYER: Heavenly Father forgive me of my sins against you I believe Jesus Christ died and was raised again for my salvation I receive him as lord and saviour and receive the Holy Spirit and power to overcome temptation.
